Part 1-The Interview
This course will focus on the Art of Interviewing people for video or audio documentation. Through practice sessions and demonstrations we will hone in on techniques so you have the best strategy to get really good info out of the people you choose to profile. In the end you will learn the right questions to ask and when to ask them so you can produce a deeper, richer story for your campaign or cause.
We recommend but don't require you participate in Part 2 in the next session.
As organizers we are presented with an amazing variety of digital tools and ways to use them. How do they fit together? How do they connect to our broader organizational strategies? This introductory session will shed light on the process of strategizing for optimum use of technology to advance your goals.
Part 2-Production Techniques
This course will focus on video production techniques for the Smartphone (lighting, framing, movement, etc). The class emphasizes organic techniques and is really geared towards folks who are not familiar with shooting video and want to make great videos on a small, consumer device.As companies turn their attention to social media to increase their profits, those of us interested in defending the public good have new opportunities for holding them accountable. Online petitions, Twitter, and Facebook have become staples of online organizing campaigns against corporations. In this conversation, we will discuss examples of creative online actions that had a significant impact on elections, workers rights, and the environment.
Text messaging is an extremely versatile (and underused) tool for organizing communities. This session will cover the basics of digital organizing for issue campaigns through SMS (text messaging), including its strengths and shortcomings, and useful tactics and strategies for directing a successful campaign via text messaging. Some of this session will also cover the pros and cons of running a bilingual--English and Spanish--SMS campaign.
